Meeting the Needs of GT Students in the Science Classroom (6 hours) **Highly Popular

Meeting the Needs of the G/T Student in the Science Classroom Part Duex (minimum 3 hours) Curriculum Hours  Participants will continue the study of differentiation by examining higher preparation strategies.  Participants will work with cubing, tiered lessons, and multiple types of menus, (determined by time.) (T.A.G.T Approved - 1 hour of Differentiated Curriculum and 2 hours of Creativity and Instructional Strategies)
Using Kaplan’s Models in Science. (3 hours) Curriculum Hours Participants are introduced to Kaplan's icons, and model of depth and complexity, as well as universal themes and generalizations.  They are shown a model science lesson using the icons to enhance student participation.  They then brainstorm how they might be able to use Kaplan's model in their own classroom.
Integrating Science TEKS Grade 6: (minimum 6 hours intended for teams if possible) Participants prioritize the TEKS based on their prior experiences and preexisting activities.  Once the prioritization is done, each unit of study is examined for needs of activities and higher order thinking activities.  Teams are then divided to create the needed activities.  Activities are shared as they are completes.

Middle School I.P.C. Share Session: (minimum 2 hours) Introductions, then assessment of needs (usually through consensus building activities), teachers will share what activities they have brought or have used in the past.  I present at least one new activity which matches the unit of study coming up in the next few weeks (or grading period.)
Using CBLs in the Science Classroom (minimum 2 hours)CBLs (Calculator Based Laboratories) are an easy and effective way for science students to collect and graph data.  This in-service goes over the basic function of the probeware, CBL and TI-73, as well as how to use them in sample labs.
IPC Mini-Labs (at least 1 hour) Participants will rotate through mini-labs which they could use in their own classroom.  Mini-stations could include but not limited to: Gas laws, Physical and Chemical Changes, Periodical Table, etc.
Earth Science Mini-Labs (at least 1 hour) Participants will rotate through mini-labs which they could use in their own classroom.  Mini-stations could include but not limited to: Density in the Classroom, Earthquake Simulations, The Rock Cycle, Rock Classification

Mentoring:

Mentoring Strategies for Thornton Mentors (6 hours) The first three hours, the mentoring program is discussed as well as its importance, mentors are given information on the three different types of mentoring styles.  Each style is evaluated for personality choices and effectiveness. The second part of the in-service is for both mentors and mentees.  There are get to know you games, as well as a discussion about making the relationships successful for everyone involved.
Meeting the Needs of the "Newbie" (6 hours)  ** Various one hour follow up sessions. Every 4 - 5 weeks a meeting is held to discuss current issues of concern:  parent communications, dealing with vocal parents, discipline techniques, grading strategies, evaluations (PDAS), etc.
Incentives that "make the grade!" (6 hours)  ** Various one hour follow up sessions. These sessions cover the cycles that new teaches go through as the year progresses.  It keeps the mentors on track with what their mentees may need.  Incentives are brainstormed and plans made for meeting the needs of the newbie. :)
